I seem to recall a few people have Beyonwiz as well as Toppy. My 2400 is getting to be a pain so I bought a U4. Quite a neat little box, with a lot of built-in features that have to rely on TAPS on toppy. But....

The user interface is functionally not too bad, but the appearance is like some kid decided to use every possible feature. So there are lots of colours, very dark backgrounds, often combined with gradients, and tiny fonts. In general it is just ugly and hard to use. They obviously do not use a graphic designer.

Iirc, Ian copies recordings back to his toppy to play them. Is this because the interface is so bad or is there another reason?

I wondered about getting a different skin that was more usable, but there appears to be only one alternative which is dependent on which version of the software the device is running. If a new version changes the user interface, the skin has to be adapted and reinstalled. As far as I can see, the skin is just a bunch of bitmaps which must match the sizes and shapes of the various items on the screen.

Is there no way to get something as functional and attractive as the toppy?

I have never taken the effort to come to grips with either the T2 or U4. The main reasons I continue to watch on Toppy is inertia - I have been using them for about 15 years (could be longer). Also it make things easier for my wife who is used to the Toppy way of things.

In some ways the Beyonwiz is more stable than Toppy - the ftp server just works (unlike the iffy implementation on the 2400), the ability to have padding greater than 30 minutes. Not yet had either T2 or U4 start spontaneously rebooting, so the design must not put as much stress on cables and file system appears to be more stable.

Even though I have had the U4 for a couple of months, all I have done is tell it to record things using Ice-TV. Then I have watched a few things on a Mac after mounting the U4 as a volume. There have been a few glitches, such as pauses of a second or so in playback. I do not know whether this is the U4 or the old Mac not being able to keep up.

I have a U4 and there OK,i thought i better grab one before another PVR manufacturer goes bellyup.
The current crop of guys on the BW Forum are good, genuinely try to help and i've needed their assistance a couple of times so far..Big contrast from the early days where they would post amongst themselves while problems went unanswered or if people did get a answer they were worded to make the Poster look like a fool.
I still use the 2400 & 7160 for day to day Rec. but its only a matter of time before the MB's cark it for good, esp. the 2400.

davidmorr'  david' I would think that it could be a loose antenna wall plug or the Mac? When we have thunderstorms (Sunshine Coast Qld) it causes, dropouts, Staggering or Pixelation, during recording these are my experiences

& Fred Before I purchased the U4 I checked out the forum Beyonwiz and tried to register but I couldn't I will have to give it another Try

Cheers People Dasha [biggrin][thumb]

Yeah, the BW Forum can be iffy like having to log in every visit but have another go at Registering.
In the meantime the guys that help on WP are good and genuinely try to help.

Some web site admins get carried away with security. Yes, I would be serious on security if I was running a bank web site, or even a shop with a saved credit card. But a forum for discussing a PVR? Bit over the top.

Once you have experience sustained attack on a forum you will understand why they impose security. There are bots that can post hundreds of post a minute - saw this recently on one of the forums I frequent.

So far we have been lucky and I have not needed to impose any security measures. But they are there if the need arises.

Have any of you Beyonwiz owners compared the picture with the Toppy? I find it a bit contrasty. There are unfortunately dozens of settings and it is not clear what each one does. :-(

The picture from the T2 does not seem as good as from my Toppys or SKIPPA. For the U4 I have not noticed any issues.

With the T2 I have had issues with using HDMI and have resorted to composite - not an issue as I only use T2 for recording, not viewing, whereas I do use the U4 for viewing. The T2 issue may have something to do with the HDMI switch I am using.
