If you are handy its quite possible to repair the remote.
Problem is usually due to the carbon impregnated buttons loosing their conductivity with use.

Just need to open it up and apply some conductive material to the carbon impregnated plastic button.
At a pinch a tiny patch of aluminium sticky tape stuck to the plastic button works great as a semi permanent fix.
Conductive paint works well (eg copper paint for fixing car window heater tracks or the silver paint sold by Jaycar).

Thanks.
Sorry for such a late reply. Haven't go online for a while.

The only problem is how to open up the remote without completely breaking it.

You can pry the unit open with a credit card or the like, but probably some (or all!) of the lock tabs will break.
If the 2 half's won't stay together after the fix, just hot glue them together or run some sticky tape along the joints.

Its better than binning it.
